The idea.
Like exploring music with someone who knows it inside out, helping you find what to hear next and understand why it connects.
Follow connections in rhythm, production, mood, or instrumentation.
Explore neighboring styles, shared scenes, different eras, and musical lineage. Leave room for something unexpected.
Understand what connects two records, with room for your own ears to disagree.
Related-record discovery and explanations are in development.
How it works
Start with something playing now, or bring a song you already love. Listening and analysis are the starting point for exploring its connections.
Choose Listen & analyze to capture 15 seconds and send the clip to Useful Magic for analysis. Cancel before recording finishes to send nothing.
Load a file for analysis, or save a YouTube discovery for later.
The intelligence underneath
Record Crush is the first product from Useful Magic. We’re developing a system that combines audio analysis with structured musical knowledge, metadata, and context.
Your ears have a say, too. Adjust a description, add the recording details you know and keep your own listening notes. Your edits stay with the discovery, alongside the original analysis.
Before you begin.
Listen for 15 seconds to identify a song and explore its sound. Follow the match into music catalogs, adjust the details and save it to your discoveries or Wantlist. You can also analyze an audio file and keep YouTube links for later.
We’re planning a “Keep listening?” prompt after the first 15 seconds, so you can choose a longer capture for deeper analysis. Live captures currently stop at 15 seconds. File analysis uses the complete uploaded file. YouTube links are saved for later.
A native iPhone app is in development. This site offers an early browser workspace for microphone listening, audio analysis and saved discoveries.
Yes. Choose Edit beside the recording details or Adjust beside the sound descriptions. Pick another suggestion when one is available, write your own or mark it as uncertain. You can return to the original result at any time. These edits stay in your browser and are not uploaded for training.
They stay in this browser on this device. Audio is retained only when you choose it. You can search your discoveries, keep a Wantlist and export your notes and results. The export does not include audio. Clearing browser storage removes local discoveries, so export anything you want to keep.
Follow your ears.
